[Intro 1] [G] [Verse 1] [G]Now, our hometown's a little old town, and never much going on. Well, I've [A]seen the whole town turn out [Em]just to listen to [A]an organ grinder song. But a bunch of [C]us rotten old [Cm]boys that [C]ride motorcycles started spreading [D]the rumor around that it would really [G]be funny to see old Slow John Fairburn take a motor[D]cycle ride [A]around town.[G] Now Slow John's oh I guess 70 years old and plays check[A]ers down on the square and I've never seen him do anything faster than a walk and at times he'll slow that [C]down a hair. So we went [D]around collecting some money and came up with a hundred [G]dollar bill And we let it be known that come Saturday [Em]would be Slow [F#]John's [G]show and tell. Well, Saturday rolled around and it was kind of hot, [A]but it looked like the whole town came, and they all gathered around old Pete [Em]Jones an[C]d Slow John's checker game. [D]We came roaring up on those motorcycles [G]an d the motor revving up loud, And we plopped our money down on the checker table [Em]an d[G] a snicker kind of went through the crowd Slow John looked at the crowd [D]and then he looked at the money, [A]and I don't think he [Em]got uptight [A]an d Pete Jones says well [Em]John it looks [A]like it's your move [C]an d old John says you know what I think you're right [D]Well, he hitched up his britches, and he spit in his hands [G]and Said could I borrow your bike for [D]a while? [Em]And he said, b[D]y the way, would [G]you women and children kind of stand back? And I swear I saw him smile. [A]He said, okay, boys, I need me something wet. And he downed [C]the beer. And he picked up a [D]flower from a nearby shrub, and he stuck it [G]behind his ear. Well, he kicked down on that motorcycle starter and that motor [A]kicked into a roar, [C]and he [D]showered down Haas and he laid [G]a strip of rubber all the way to the grocery [A]store. Women were [C]screaming and [D]dogs started barking, [G]the kids were getting a thrill, cause he [A]made Evel Knievel [C]look like he needed [D]training wheels. [G]He popped himself a wheelie across that courthouse [A]lawn, and he roared right up the front [C]stairs.[D] [G]An old lady stobs up at the highway department, fainted, and fell right across the chair. Well John picked [A]up his money and [G]he said with a grin, enjoyed the ride [A]boys, [G]thanks a lot. And old [D]Pete laughed and [G]said, boys, I could have told you, but I think you needed a lesson or two, because you see, Slow John Fairbairn was motorcycle champ in [C]30, [D]31, and 32. [G]
