there were an awful lot
of longhorn cows in Texas
and an awful lot of people back east

The trouble was that the
cows and the people

were way up [C]in Kansas,
nearly 1 ,000 [D]miles north of south Texas,
so there was no way to [G]get the
cattle to mar[D]ket.
Well, a rancher named Chisholm
[G]had himself a [D]dandy idea.
If they couldn't bring the railroad to the cattle,
why not bring the [G]cattle to the railroad?
[D]So he put a herd together,
hired a crew of young cow[G]boys,
and [D]drove them north to the rail
[G]head in Abilene, [D]Kansas.
[G]Now[D], a lot of cowboys
drove a lot of herds from Texas to Kansas
on that very same route,
but it was always known as
the Old [E]Chisholm [D]Trail.[G][C]

behind schedule
and have to drive them hungry
