at last as [C]far as he could see
That he'd [G]have to catch himself
a cod to cook on the [D]coals [G]for tea

So he rigged a line [G]from binder twine that
[C]he'd scrounged from a farmers hay
And then [G]fashioned a hook from a rusty
nail that got stuck [D]in his foot that day
Well he [G]looked with pride on his fishing gear
and [C]to try he could hardly wait
Then he [G]saw at last as anglers do you must
[D]cover your hook with [G]bait

[G]He remembered a tale that someone
told in the [C]dim and distant past
That [G]frogs were the things that the anglers
used for the [D]fish to break their fasts
[G]But frogs were as scarce as teeth on hens
or [C]that's what he said to me
But he [G]searched around till he found
a frog at the [D]foot of a light wood [G]tree

Well he stalked that frog [G]on hands and knees
like [C]big game hunters do
But a black [G]snake coming the other
way had the [D]same idea in view
But [G]both of them grabbed together
[C]but the snake was a fraction fast
It [G]swallowed the frog but found itself
[D]held in the swagman's grasp
Well he [G]fished from his pocket a flask

he had of [C]very potent grog
And [G]said with a sigh it must be done
I [D]want that flamin' frog

[G]Well he squeezed that wriggling reptile's
neck til its [C]jaws were opened wide
Then with [G]tears in eyes he poured
the lot [D]into the snakes' insides
Well it [G]gave a gurgle and then a gulp
and [C]then quite a twist or two
And there was that old [G]frog in the
light of day [D]almost as good as [G]new

Well he grabbed that frog and [G]hurried
away to [C]bait up his rusty hook
And then lay [G]back on the grassy bank by
[D]the side of that peaceful brook
Then he [G]felt a tap on his shoulderblade and
[C]turned with eyes agog!!
And [G]there was that snake all bleary
eyed in its [D]mouth was another frog
[G]

Well that was the tale that was told to me
at a [C]camp on the reedy flat
[G]Maybe it's true or maybe not
you'd [D]best be the judge of that
But [G]what I can hardly believe is,
is the [C]way that he liked the grog
He [G]would give it away to a worthless
snake for the [D]sake of a useless [G]frog
